About South Africa Pre Union
Before the Union of South Africa in 1910, four colonies issued stamps: Cape of Good Hope, Natal, Transvaal, and Orange River Colony. The Cape Triangular of 1853 is the most famous. Natal issued its first stamps in 1857. The Transvaal Republican stamps are historically significant. The Orange Free State stamps are rare. These colonial stamp series document the complex political history of South Africa before unification.
