Penny Black
About Penny Black
The worlds first adhesive postage stamp. Featured a profile of young Queen Victoria. Designed by Henry Corbould based on a sketch by William Wyon. Printed in black with a value of one penny. The stamp had no perforations and had to be cut with scissors. Over 68 million were printed in just over a year before being replaced by the Penny Red. The plate number was hidden in the check letters. Unused Penny Blacks with original gum are worth tens of thousands of dollars.
