Penny Red
About Penny Red
The successor to the Penny Black, printed in red to make the black cancellation marks more visible. Featured the same Queen Victoria profile. Over 21 billion Penny Reds were printed during its 38 year lifespan. Perforations were introduced in 1854. The Penny Red is much more affordable than the Penny Black. Plate 77 Penny Reds are extremely rare because the plate was rejected before production but a few copies escaped. Most Penny Reds are worth only a few dollars.
