The first commemorative stamps of the United States, marking the 400th anniversary of Columbus voyage. 16 denominations from 1 cent to 5 dollars were issued, the largest set to date. Featured scenes from Columbus life including his petition to the Spanish court, his landing, and his return. The 5 dollar Columbian is the highest value US stamp at the time. Over 2 billion Columbians were sold. The series established the commemorative stamp as a philatelic tradition.
