The first stamps of Soviet Russia, issued in 1921. Featured the hammer and sickle emblem of the Soviet state. The RSFSR, the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, was the largest republic of the USSR. Early Soviet stamps featured revolutionary iconography including workers, soldiers, and peasants. The first Soviet definitives were crude compared to the imperial stamps they replaced. Soviet stamp design evolved rapidly to become sophisticated propaganda tools.
