Indian First Stamp
About Indian First Stamp
The first stamps of India featured Queen Victoria and were issued in 1854. The 1 anna red and 4 anna blue and red were the first values. The stamps were printed in India from electrotype plates. The 4 anna bicolor inverted head is extremely rare. Indian stamps from the British colonial period are called Indian Empire stamps. They were used throughout British India including modern Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Burma. Indian philately is rich and varied, documenting colonial and post independence history.
