The first stamps of Hong Kong, featuring Queen Victoria. Hong Kong was a British crown colony from 1842 to 1997. The stamps were used throughout Hong Kong and in British post offices in China and Japan. The 2 cent rose lilac is the most common. Hong Kong stamps from the colonial period feature British monarchs. The handover to China in 1997 ended the colonial stamp era. Hong Kong stamps document the transformation from British colony to special administrative region of China.
