Israeli Doar Ivri
About Israeli Doar Ivri
The first stamps of the State of Israel, issued on May 16, 1948, just two days after independence. Featured ancient Jewish coins from the Bar Kokhba revolt. The stamps were inscribed Doar Ivri meaning Hebrew Post because the name of the new state had not yet been chosen. Overprinted sheets with the word Israel were prepared but not issued. The Doar Ivri stamps are collected as the founding issue of modern Israeli philately. The designs reflect Jewish historical continuity.
