Cape Triangular
About Cape Triangular
The first stamps of the Cape of Good Hope colony in South Africa. Distinctive triangular shape designed to help illiterate postal clerks sort mail from Europe. Featured a seated Britannia. The 1 penny red and 4 pence blue were the first issues. The Cape Triangular is one of the most recognizable classic stamps. The woodcut model was carved by William Humphrys. Unused Cape Triangulars are worth thousands of dollars. The shape was practical and iconic.
