About Canadian Beaver Stamp

The first stamp of the Province of Canada, featuring a beaver as the central design element. The beaver symbolized the fur trade that built Canada. Designed by Sandford Fleming, who later proposed standard time zones. The 3 penny beaver was one of the first stamps to feature an animal rather than a monarch. The design was revolutionary in using an emblem of industry rather than royal authority. Canada continued the beaver tradition on many later stamps.
