Australian Colonial Stamps
About Australian Colonial Stamps
Before federation in 1901, each Australian colony issued its own stamps. New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia, and Tasmania all had distinct stamp issues. The Victorian Half Length was engraved on a single die and transferred to plates. The Western Australia Swan stamps featured a black swan, unique among British colonial issues. Collecting the six colonial stamp series is a major specialty within Australian philately.
