About Indian Service Stamp
Indian service stamps were overprinted with Service for exclusive government use. The first service stamps were issued in 1948 after independence. The 10 rupees Service stamp of 1948 featuring Mahatma Gandhi is one of the most famous Indian stamps. Only 100 were issued for use by the Indian government. Unused copies are extremely rare. The Gandhi Service stamp is the most valuable modern Indian stamp. The overprint tradition for official mail continues to this day.
