About Zurich 4 and 6 Rappe

The first stamps of the Canton of Zurich, and among the first stamps in the world outside Britain. The 4 rappen was for local mail and 6 rappen for cantonal mail. Featured a large numeral in the center with a patterned surround. Over 16,000 sheets were printed. The design was functional rather than decorative. Zurich stamps were used until Switzerland standardized postage in 1850. These are collected as early classics of philately.
